Randalls coming to Steiner Ranch

That is the rumor going around. It would be the south-east corner of Quinlan and 620. I heard they are surveying some residents about what they think. If someone has their email or contact I can tell them about this blog and see if they can see comments here.

My take… the convenience is nice, but I like HEB… unless they do an upscale Randall’s that is like a Central Market it will just be average instead of outstanding. I feel bad for Steiner Ranch Steakhouse, they get a view of the Randall’s parking lot now.

Interesting thread here where I got another hint of the rumor.

I’ve heard this rumor too. Even if it is more upscale, I will still go to HEB. Despite their new “lower” prices and using that blasted card, HEB is still a lot cheaper.

And if you want upscale, there is a Central Market going in the new development outside of Grandview Hills (across from Wal-Mart).

I would feel bad for the steakhouse if they didn’t know beforehand about the view. But that space has been zoned for mixed use since Steiner Ranch’s inception, so they had to know something would go there eventually.

I would definitely shop at HEB instead of Safeway (who wholly owns Randalls) or would go to a nearby Central Market. In fact – it would be great if Central Market were to open in front instead of Randalls/Safeway, which continues to be overpriced and a poor shopping experience with poorly made store brands compared to HEB and Central Market – the best supermarket grocers out there, IMO.

I hope they don’t open…I’ll drive either The Market for convenience items or just go all of the way to HEB just to avoid Randall’s.

When Randalls was owned by the Randalls family (years ago, before the sale), it was a fabulous chain. Now it’s just another Safeway. Even if it was a Central Market, I’d rather keep the green space and make the drive to HEB.

We don’t need yet another grocery store in the same 5 mile radius. One of the reasons we moved to Steiner was because of its natural beauty. Chopping down trees and pouring concrete just adds blight to what is otherwise a beautiful vista. Stay away Randalls!

I couldn’t agree more – our HEB is fabulous, always has everything I need. Then, the Market is ideal for quick trips when I’ve forgotten something.

With Randall’s increased prices there is no way we would start using them over HEB/SR Market. No interest here!

I’m torn…I like the Randalls in Lakeway…beautiful store…but that’s just it, it’s in Lakeway and we have an H-E-B already…I say if we are going to put a grocery store anywhere, it should be hidden further back and off the road so it’s not visible…kind of like the Walmart is…don’t ruin the scenery

I agree. Randals is too expensive and I certainly would never shop there when HEB is so close. Plus that area is so pretty it is a shame to take away all that green space for a supermarket that is not needed. If not enough people shop there and they decide to closs it down, we will end up having a big empty building there – yuck.

I agree with everyone else here.
The loss of the beautiful green space around the entrance would be sad, but it will happen eventually. Most of the area around 620/Quinlan is slated for mixed use.

The drive into Steiner was more scenic before the apartments rose like termite mounds from the hills, and those apts have been in Chapter 11 for a while.

I think HEB is beautiful, but I don’t go there because Wal Mart is so much cheaper. I’ve actually kept track and I save at least $30 a week on “usual” items like cereal, eggs, milk, toilet paper, etc…. I just go to HEB for produce or when I need something special. And, Wal Mart isn’t ever so packed. I would never, ever go to Randalls. Their prices are outrageous. Last time I was there it was $6.50 for a stick of Ban deodorant.

Our family shops in the same way described by ‘anon’. I think the only options that might cause us to change our behavior is if a Trader Joe’s or Farmer’s Market-type store were to appear in that space or close by.

Man you look at that map and see soooo much mixed use planned for Steiner, it’s depressing. Especially when you think of how much unrented commercial space there is around here. And anyway, do we really need another nail salon or pak n mail type place? That’s usually what you get from these suburban shopping strips. I went to the Randalls in Lakeway for the first time and thought it sucked. High prices, nothing special when it came to selection. I’m an HEB loyalist unless it’s to get a specialty item at Central Market or Whole Foods.

So you’ll burn $5 in gas driving to HEB to get a can of beans for .20c less? Makes sense.

HEB is 2 miles away. Unless you’re going there by airplane, you’re not going to use $5 in gas. And I don’t think anyone is talking about going for ONE item. But when you go for several, yes, HEB’s prices are lower enough than Randall’s to justify the drive (all 2 miles of it).

I think some companies believe I’m going to freak out if I have to drive more than 5 miles to my nearest Walgreens, Home Depot or grocery store. Well I’m not. I do not need Randalls at the entrance to Steiner. Many years ago out here in Steiner you could only get pizza delivery from “Z’s” pizza, unless he went on vacation, then you had to think of something else. First no civilization, now too much! I like the Market if you need just a couple of things, HEB for the big trip. Randall’s is a business and they are supposed to complete research first to see if there is a need or demand for their business. Sadly, if it does not work out there will be a huge anchor tenant sitting up by the Welcome Center with a big ugly empty parking lot. And we’ll be stuck with that eyesore for a long time.

I hate the Randall’s card thing so much I won’t shop there. The prices without the card are INSANE and the prices with the card are still more than HEB. I get irritated when HEB discontinues items I like (which happens A LOT), but not enough to make Randall’s my primary store.

Why can’t we get Whole Foods or Central Market? Why does it have to be a crappy Randall’s that is going out of business everywhere in Austin? Why would they bring it here to Steiner? I WANT WHOLE FOODS! I want organic, not another Randalls!

The site is zoned for retail/commercial, and, and Anononon says, a Randall’s is only rumored. The site is large enough for a grocery store anchor tenant,so it is logical that it would be Randall’s since HEB already has a store in the area.

Now we just need a CVS right next to the Walgreens and Lowes right next to the Home Depot. Maybe we could add a Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Best Buy, Academy, Kohls, ToysRUs, & World Market too. Show those trees who is boss!

Anyone up for a “Town hall” like meeting to see if we can a least have say as to what goes in the shopping center. It sure would be nice to have “family friendly” retail/restaurants.

How many grocery stores do we need around here? It isn’t a hassle to drive to HEB especially because HEB is far better than Randalls in every way possible.

The only reason I moved here is because of it’s amazing view not to see a Randall’s. So the owner who is making the choice isn’t thinking this straight. I’M MOVING!

I ain’t telling – did you look at the master plan before you moved here? Because that area has been planned for this type of development since Steiner’s master plan was created.
