Bill:

My comment was more directed to noting that the corporate parent of Cool River is an entity that owns/operates lots of places. It may well be that one of the partners at Steiner is also in managment at Austin Cool River.
I agree with you on Cool River -overrated.

hmm...according to their own press release, there are two primary partners. We'll see. I'm not trashing it, I'm saying I hope they don't put a tried an tested awesome restaurant out of business. And if they do, I hope it's based upon something greater than a 3 million dollar business and a great view. If that's trashing it, I apologize. I actually thought I was quite diplomatic.

Bill --

Why would you trash a place before it even opens? What good could you possibly hope to come from that?
By the way, Cool River is actually a corporate restaurant. The group that owns the Cool River chain also owns the III Forks restaurants and Cantina Laredo chain, among others.Hopefully, Steiner Steakhouse will trend towards the quality of III Forks.

The Backstage Steakhouse is located about ten miles west of the intersection of hwy 620 and hwy 71. From here they're on the right side of 71. If you've never been there, you should go. The chef has been in austin for a couple of decades and was the executive chef at Jeffry's for something like 10 years. It's a little out of the way, but you can't beat it. Just check out what they say about it on chowhound. it's one of the most highly recommended restaurants in austin.

My wife and I first ate there about three months ago on a sunday evening drive in the hill country. Found it comepletely by chance. We've been back probably 20 times. The service is great and the food is amazing. I mean AMAZING. Prices aren't bad, it's not a place I'd bring children younger than 8 or so. They have music on their patio on the weekends, and the owners have been there everytime we've been out to eat. Cool place too, the owners used to own a touring catering company that catered to music business celebs. The place is filled with their own memerobilia. Can you tell I like this place? lol

where is the Backstage Steakhouse? I've never heard of it. Also, I heard there was going to be an Outback Steakhouse in the new High Point Village - is that just a rumor?

Steiner Ranch Steakhouse will be run by the same guys who run Cool River Cafe up north on Parmer. Yes, it's going to be beautiful, but for my money I'll skip the ambiance and go to the Backstage Steakhouse, which may not be as pretty but has some of the best food in the area, regardless of what you're looking for; Steaks or Something else. Besides, I really don't see how the guys who own cool river could possibly open another restaurant, with such dismal reviews from people who eat out all the time. Yes, this place will be closer to home than the Backstage, but you can't beat that crusted beef tenderloin. Or that Coconut Buttermilk Pie, or their service really. I'm trying to be positive. I just hope a mediocre high end place doesn't put a really good established restaurant out of business just because they're closer to us.
